I remember one of my first few encounters with other undocumented college students was at UCLA. Their fierce ganas pushed me to continue my own higher education. If you’re around UCLA or if you go to UCLA go check out this show that was curated by Khushboo Kataria Gulati! Also, thanks to Jesús Iñiguez for making me look pretty in this picture. #iLike
Have you ever experienced being stopped and asked for your papers? What did it feel like? Were you frightened or angry?
Well, I’ve gotten pulled over a couple of times. Once, when I was in college and working the graveyard shift at a store, I got pulled over. After the cop decided to search my car for drugs and called backup, they “thought” they found something. After a couple of code words amongst the now 5 cops, one of them pointed a gun at me an told me to freeze. I’d never seen a gun and my whole life flashed in an instant. A few moments after, which felt like an eternity, the cop searching my car dimly said, “nevermind.” The cop pointing the gun at me slowly lowered his killing artifact. Now, would this have happened if I had papers? Probably. Just look at the historic treatment of young men of color by cops. Did I want to deny the cops the searching of my car? Yeah, but I agreed cos I didn’t want to get deported and I simply didn’t know better back in 2003.
Hello!! I saw your artwork recently shown on Black Girl Dangerous, and I was wondering if you sell prints anywhere, cause I would totally love to buy one from you of the Lisa and Daria picture! You're really talented! xx
